Credit cards go down, contactless arrives

After the smartphones come contactless mobile phones, the new payment method that will bury credit cards, ATMs and cash: the contactless.

Technology never stops, and we must try to keep up with it. Considering that now you do not have to leave the house for shopping anymore, but you can make purchases online from the comfort of your chair, we must weigh the choice of credit card that best suits us, comparing for example the advantages offered by American Express, MasterCard or Visa.

CONTACTLESS: WHAT IS IT?
Anyone taking a quick look at the Mobile Payment Index numbers, the survey by the Dutch company Adyen , will not fail to notice that in 2013 mobile terminals were the protagonists of 20% of the total payments made during the year, with a growth of 55% compared to the previous year. The transactions carried out through this new payment method have reached a total value of 250 billion dollars.

But what are the mobile terminals? They are devices that allow you to make payments without having to insert your credit card or debit card into Pos readers. This new payment method is made possible by the existence of NFC (Near Field Communication) chips, radio devices that allow payments to be made in contactless mode, simply approaching your card to the enabled Pos.

But in the future there will no longer be only credit cards and smartphones. We've all heard of Google Glass and smartwatch. Now they have also invented the smart rings. They are all wearable devices that perform the function of current credit cards by means of small gestures. The secret is radiofrequency identification.

It has not been long ago that smartphone software was invented to enable online payments, or digital wallet services presented by the same companies that offer credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard. But technology is tirelessly at a gallop and never stops, so new things have already been circulated.

In reality, these innovations have not yet reached mass distribution, even if in an Italy with a population of 59 million people, there are 9 million smartphones equipped with NFC chips, and the Pos terminals enabled for contactless payment are already 150,000. It's only a matter of time if we think of all the devices that the big hi-tech companies offer us.
